People who work in the helping professions, such as nursing, education, medicine, ministry, and psychotherapy, are those whose occupation involves nurturing the physical, psychological, intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth and development of others. It is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, for helping professionals to maintain boundaries that protect the balance between personal and family life, and work.
One of my passions is to promote the wellbeing of helping professionals by encouraging people to care for themselves first, exploring and stoking their motivation to persevere, and treating compassion fatigue and burnout.
Here is a great tool from Stamm (2012) that people can use to do a quick self-check.
